Afghan forces attacked Pakistani military positions along the border, leading to intense clashes that have lasted five days. According to Pakistani officials, 67 Afghan troops and one Pakistani soldier were killed. The Taliban’s defense ministry in Kabul denied these claims, asserting that Afghan forces repelled Pakistani attacks and inflicted their own casualties on Pakistani troops.
The conflict escalated after Afghanistan retaliated against recent Pakistani airstrikes. Pakistan reported numerous attacks along its southern border, killing many Afghan soldiers, while Afghanistan accused Pakistan of violating its airspace and targeting civilians, resulting in significant civilian casualties.
The UN has warned that the ongoing violence is worsening Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis, reporting at least 42 civilian deaths and over 100 injuries since the clashes began. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari defended military actions as necessary against militants based in Afghanistan, while Islamabad seeks to address rising violence attributed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which operates from Afghan territory—a claim Afghanistan denies.
The current fighting has disrupted a previous ceasefire, and negotiations have failed to produce a lasting agreement. Both sides continue to accuse each other of harboring militants and contributing to the ongoing violence.
