Cuban Interior Ministry officials have revealed details about a recent incident involving a Florida-registered speedboat carrying suspected terrorists off Cuba’s north coast. Four suspects were killed when they engaged in a firefight with Cuban soldiers, and authorities confirmed that the group had left the U.S. in two boats. One boat broke down, resulting in a transfer of supplies to the other vessel.
Onboard the speedboat were high-powered weapons, over 12,800 rounds of ammunition, 11 pistols, tactical gear, and a camouflage backpack. Captain Ivy Daniel Carballo of the Cuban Border Patrol described the encounter, noting that their patrol vessel was fired upon, leading to the death of three attackers and injury to another.
Víctor Eduardo Álvarez Valle from the Interior Ministry highlighted the unexpected level of resistance and military equipment used by the suspects. Authorities have gathered evidence regarding the attackers’ training and funding sources.
Six Cubans have been arrested and could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or potential capital punishment, although the latter has been suspended for over a decade. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio stated that this was not a U.S. government operation, and the U.S. had been collecting its own intelligence.
