The Phoenix Hotel, an iconic rock ‘n’ roll motor lodge in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, will not close as previously announced. Initially slated for closure at the end of 2025, it was thought to be shutting down after a farewell New Year’s event. However, the hotel has unexpectedly remained open, thanks to its new owner, French baker Michel Suas, who purchased the property in 2024.
Former managing partner Isabelle Manchester noted that the decision to keep the hotel open was made suddenly and unexpectedly. A new hotelier, associated with local investor Binoy Patel, has taken over operations. The Phoenix, opened in 1987, has hosted famous guests and played a significant role in the local community, but recent challenges related to street conditions and drug activity have impacted businesses in the area.
Despite a tumultuous past year, including legal battles over local policies, Manchester expressed excitement about the hotel’s future, while Patel aims to preserve its legacy. The transition of ownership has sparked mixed feelings, but Patel has promised that “Phoenix is alive and well.”
