In Rome, controversy has erupted over a recently restored painting in the Basilica of St. Lawrence in Lucina, with critics claiming that the angel depicted bears a striking resemblance to Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The restoration, completed in December, sparked social media comparisons between Meloni and the angelic figure, prompting Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli to order an investigation.
The local Superintendent’s Office is examining documents related to the original artwork from 2000 to assess whether any modifications were unauthorized, given that the original piece is not classified as a cultural property. Restorer Bruno Valentinetti defended his work, stating he followed the original drawings and did not intend to resemble Meloni.
Cardinal Baldo Reina emphasized the need to preserve sacred art and announced that the vicarious diocese and parish priest Monsignor Daniele Micheletti would investigate further. The incident has led to public gatherings in the chapel, dubbed the “Meloni Chapel,” as visitors debate the painting’s similarities to the politician. Meanwhile, Micheletti acknowledged the resemblance but dismissed the uproar as exaggerated, referencing historical artistic practices.
