A powerful winter weather system, including a “bomb cyclone,” is affecting much of the eastern United States, bringing extreme cold and record low temperatures. Southern Florida experienced temperatures in the 20s for the first time since 1989, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service about subfreezing temperatures in the area. With many Floridians unaccustomed to such cold, some struggled without adequate heating and outerwear.
In North Carolina, the bomb cyclone resulted in significant snowfall, leading to the cancellation of over 840 flights and causing road closures due to stranded vehicles. Governor Josh Stein issued a state of emergency, urging residents to stay indoors after more than 1,000 traffic accidents were reported and at least two fatalities occurred.
The storm has also impacted states like Mississippi and Tennessee, causing significant power outages and resulting in at least 44 deaths across the affected areas. The severe weather follows a week of snow, ice, and coastal flooding that exacerbated the situation for many residents.
