Regila, a prominent figure born into an elite Roman family, was married to Herodes at the young age of 14. She contributed to significant public works in Greece, including the Great Nymphaeum at Olympia. Her life took a dark turn in 160 AD when she was fatally injured by Alcimidon, a freedman of Herodes, while eight months pregnant.
Regila’s brother accused Herodes of orchestrating the attack, leading to a high-profile court trial in Rome. Despite evidence and Herodes’s known temper, he was acquitted, likely due to his connections with Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
The details of Regila’s death remain debated, with some suggesting that Herodes may have had a role in the tragic event. After her passing, Herodes mourned publicly and commissioned the Odeon as a monument to her memory.
