Thanksgiving air travel this year faced significant disruptions due to severe winter storms, particularly affecting the upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions. On Saturday, around 2,000 flights were canceled, with major airports in Chicago and Milwaukee heavily impacted—Chicago O’Hare saw nearly half its flights canceled. By Sunday morning, an additional 490 flights were canceled, and approximately 1,815 were delayed as airlines struggled to recover.
Despite improvement in flight cancellations by Sunday, with O’Hare’s cancellations dropping to about 6% of the day’s schedule, many passengers were frustrated by the disruptions. The storms caused ripple effects across various airports, with significant cancellations reported in locations such as St. Louis and Omaha. Airlines offered flexible rebooking options to stranded travelers, urging them to check flight statuses moving forward. Although the weather’s impact was lessening, lingering disruptions may still affect road travel in certain areas.
