West Virginia Republican Senator Jim Justice has agreed to pay approximately $5.2 million in overdue personal taxes, stemming from issues dating back over a decade. Alongside his wife, Kathy, he filed a motion for a consent decree against the federal government following a lawsuit that accused them of failing to pay income taxes since 2009.
Justice, a former two-term governor who once had a net worth of $1.9 billion, saw a significant decline, recently reported at below zero due to debts exceeding his assets. The IRS has filed liens totaling over $8 million against the Justices for unpaid personal taxes. Additionally, state authorities filed a $1.4 million lien concerning sales tax on their historic hotel, The Greenbrier, as well as liens from the IRS against the hotel and its medical clinic.
The Justice family has faced multiple financial challenges, including a recent paused foreclosure auction on numerous properties related to unpaid fees, and previous efforts to avoid foreclosure on The Greenbrier. The hotel has a rich history, having hosted notable figures and featuring significant amenities, but is now mired in financial issues, including claims of unpaid employee health insurance funds.
Justice attributes his financial complications to a complex business structure managed by his children and argues the collection efforts are politically motivated. He recently took a Senate seat, succeeding Democrat Joe Manchin.
