Construction, began by China Kaishi Group in July 2023, has drawn local outrage over its environmental impact, leading the Bali government to suspend the project due to missing permits. Officials stress the initiative aims to enhance safety and tourism, noting visitor numbers have increased by over 35% this year. While some believe the elevator will improve access and safety, others argue it detracts from the natural beauty of the area. Concerns are heightened due to dangerous swimming conditions at the beach and difficulty in evacuations during emergencies.
Despite backing from officials, opposition continues from local residents and politicians, with calls for a reconsideration of the project’s necessity. Critics emphasize that the development may put tourists at risk, drawn to an area where swimming is prohibited.
