LSU has fired head coach Brian Kelly after his fourth season, despite a 10-year, $100 million contract. The decision follows a disappointing performance, including a recent loss to Texas A&M, marking LSU’s third defeat in four games. Athletic director Scott Woodward cited unmet expectations for championships as a key reason for the dismissal.
Kelly, who had a 34-14 record and led LSU to the SEC title game in 2022, failed to qualify for the College Football Playoff in his first three seasons. He developed standout players, including Heisman winner Jaden Daniels, but his tenure coincided with significant changes in college football, such as the transfer portal and new payment regulations for athletes.
Associate head coach Frank Wilson has been appointed as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. Woodward emphasized the pursuit of excellence and indicated negotiations regarding Kelly’s buyout are ongoing, potentially exceeding $52 million. Kelly, previously successful at Cincinnati and Notre Dame, was recruited by Woodward to lead LSU based on expectations that he could achieve national titles.
