The UK government is considering intervening to help Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) suppliers impacted by a recent cyber attack that forced the car manufacturer to suspend production. The attack at the end of August shut down JLR’s IT network, leading to factory closures that may extend until at least October 1, with potential disruptions continuing into November. This situation has raised concerns for suppliers, especially smaller businesses reliant solely on JLR, with estimates of production losses exceeding £50 million a week.

One proposed solution is for the government to purchase component parts from suppliers to keep them afloat until JLR resumes production. Additionally, the idea of providing government-supported loans is being discussed, although it faces resistance from suppliers. Former West Midlands mayor Andy Street has expressed support for financial assistance to these suppliers, emphasizing the significance of JLR’s economic contribution.

A Business and Trade Select Committee is set to meet to gather insights from companies in JLR’s supply chain, which includes around 100,000 workers. The National Cybersecurity Centre and National Criminal Agency are aiding JLR in the aftermath of the attack, attributed to the group Scattered Rapous $Hunters. Senior government officials are also concerned about the rising trend of cyberattacks affecting various UK companies.
