In a troubling incident, Sarah Leelee, an art teacher, reflected on her experience with Robin Westman, a former student who later opened fire at Announcement Catholic Church in Minneapolis, killing two children and injuring 18 others. Leelee noted that she had seen signs of self-harm in Westman during her time at an all-boys prep school and recognized Westman as a “child in need.” Although she described Westman as “weird” and obsessed with unusual artwork, she believed that being different did not equate to being violent.
In her Facebook post, Leelee acknowledged the failure of various systems to prevent the tragedy, emphasizing that every “killer was a child who once needed help.” Westman, 23, opened fire while attending Mass, leading to serious casualties. Despite prior mental health concerns noted by police in 2018, there were no formal records indicating mental illness at the time of the shooting.
Authorities launched an investigation, and Minnesota’s newly enacted red flag law, aimed at temporarily restricting firearms from individuals deemed a threat, did not prevent Westman from acquiring weapons. Leelee has refrained from speaking further to the media, but her post highlights complex societal issues surrounding mental health and violence.
