The City of Raleigh is commencing construction on Phase 1 of the Bas Rapid Transit (BRT) system, focused on New Bern Avenue. City traffic leaders will provide updates on how this construction will impact residents and travelers. The Wake Bus Rapid Transit Project, begun nearly two years ago, sees its first phase starting next month.
This phase includes a 5.4-mile BRT line with a dedicated 3.3-mile bus lane, connecting downtown Raleigh to Wakemed and New Hope Road, featuring 10 stations and priority green lights for buses at intersections to minimize delays.
Project manager Ayaardes highlighted that this initiative will not only upgrade roads but also enhance transport convenience. Community members will have the chance to engage with the construction team and voice concerns about the impact on their daily lives, as the project will span approximately two years. The BRT line is expected to open in summer 2030.
City leaders recently awarded a $28.6 million contract for the initial phase, and a public meeting to discuss the project will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Martin Street Baptist Church. Overall, excitement about the project remains high among residents and city officials alike.
