After a technical glitch caused a ground stop for United Airlines on Wednesday, operations began to normalize on Thursday, though passengers continued to face the aftermath. The issue, described as “technology problems,” led to a halt in departures at around 5:12 PM on Wednesday, which United announced was resolved by 9 PM. Still, two flights were canceled on Thursday at O’Hare, and many travelers dealt with ongoing delays.
Passengers expressed frustration over poor communication from the airline. Nathan Lee, who faced delays, described a lack of updates from the pilot regarding the situation. Traffic expert Joe Schwieterman explained that such glitches can trigger a full airline reset due to interconnected systems, causing widespread issues, a problem seen across various airlines recently.
Some passengers were provided accommodation on Wednesday evening, with families like Daniela Bettancourt’s receiving hotel discounts. Both Bettancourt and Lee arrived at the airport early on Thursday to avoid further complications. United was contacted for updates on the situation but had not responded by the end of the day.
