DJ LeMahieu’s time with the Yankees has come to an end, as he was assigned for a reassignment amid ongoing injury struggles. General manager Brian Cashman noted that at 37 years old, LeMahieu faced physical challenges that limited his performance. The Yankees are covering around $22 million of his contract.
With Jazz Chisholm Jr. returning to second base, the Yankees plan to fill LeMahieu’s position with players like Oswald Peraza, Yorvit Vivas, and potentially JC Eskara. Cashman indicated the Yankees are seeking a third baseman via trade by the July 31 deadline, while also needing to enhance their pitching staff.
LeMahieu’s injuries, which began in 2022 and included calf and hip issues, hampered his ability to contribute effectively. Cashman expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging LeMahieu’s efforts to return to form. Manager Aaron Boone described the decision to part ways as difficult, emphasizing LeMahieu’s contributions to the team.
In his first four seasons with the Yankees, LeMahieu had a strong performance, but his stats fell significantly in recent years due to injuries. Cashman lamented that while LeMahieu’s last few years didn’t meet expectations, injuries drastically affected his performance.
