Southwest Airlines, known for its “bag fly-free” policy, announced a major change in March, implementing fees for the first and second checked bags for most travelers, effective May 28th. CEO Bob Jordan stated this shift is part of a broader strategy to enhance profitability and adapt to evolving customer expectations post-pandemic. He emphasized the importance of offering more choices to customers and acknowledged the competitive landscape, where Southwest previously stood out as the only major US airline offering two free checked bags.

As part of the new policy, Business Select Flyers and Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members can still check two bags for free, while A-List Status Owners and Southwest Credit Card users can check one bag at no extra cost. This change aims to align Southwest with competitors like American, Delta, and United Airlines, which already charge for checked baggage.

Looking ahead, airlines are expected to continue adapting their business models and reward programs to meet consumer demands.
