During the British Grand Prix, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner discussed the impact of Oscar Piastri’s 10-second penalty. Piastri received the penalty for braking excessively behind the safety car while leading, which allowed Max Verstappen to momentarily overtake him. Unlike a previous incident involving George Russell in Canada, the Silverstone stewards deemed Piastri’s braking too harsh, causing significant speed reduction.
Horner noted that while he expected Piastri to be penalized, he found it surprising that Russell was not penalized earlier. Despite starting from pole position, Verstappen finished fifth due to the penalty incident and challenging race dynamics. Red Bull had set up Verstappen’s car for optimal performance in varying conditions, but the heavy rain led to difficulties during the race, particularly following the safety car’s deployment. Overall, Horner felt the team’s strategy to reduce downforce was a calculated risk, although the outcome was affected by the challenging weather and track conditions.
