In January, Southern California experienced historic wildfires that resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and the destruction of thousands of buildings, including homes of Hollywood stars. While wildfires are common, climate change is exacerbating their frequency and intensity across the U.S., affecting areas from the West Coast to the Northeast. Climate scientist Justin Mankin highlighted that rising temperatures due to global warming, along with severe droughts, significantly increase the likelihood of conditions that lead to wildfires. He noted that while Northeastern states like New Hampshire may experience less drought risk on average, when droughts do occur, they develop quickly. This was evident in December when New Hampshire faced drought conditions, prompting rare fire warnings. Mankin emphasized the importance of resource allocation towards forest and wildfire management to help mitigate these risks.
