The mutual interest between Jason Kidd and the New York Knicks has been confirmed, following Kidd’s signing with the Dallas Mavericks. Kidd’s interest in the Knicks comes after the team’s President, Leon Rose, fired coach Tom Thibodeau after their elimination in the Eastern Conference Finals. Kidd played for the Knicks in his final NBA season and has coached the Mavericks for the past four years, including a recent trip to the NBA Finals.
Kidd has a strong relationship with Knicks All-Star Jalen Brunson, who played under him in Dallas. While veteran NBA writer Mark Stein reported that the Knicks would seek permission to speak with Kidd, it remains unclear if this has happened. Kidd has a history of coaching with the Nets and Bucks, and the Knicks are also reportedly interested in Ime Udoka, though the Rockets won’t allow discussions.
Kidd signed a two-year extension with the Mavericks through 2026-27, suggesting that compensation might be necessary if he moves to the Knicks. He boasts a .516 career winning percentage over nine seasons as an NBA coach, having previously been an assistant with the Lakers and contributing to the Mavericks’ only championship in 2011.
