A recent incident at Barstool Sansom Street, a Philadelphia sports bar founded by Dave Portnoy, led to at least one Temple University student being suspended. The controversy arose when a customer ordered a sign reading "f**k Jews," sparking outrage and immediate scrutiny from Portnoy, who launched an investigation. Two employees involved were fired.
Temple University is also investigating the incident, emphasizing a commitment to combatting anti-Semitism. University president John Fry condemned the act, stating that such discrimination is intolerable. He indicated that the school would treat this as an educational opportunity.
In response to the incident, Portnoy suggested sending the patrons responsible on a trip to Auschwitz as a form of education. The Philadelphia Defense League has also been monitoring the situation, reinforcing that anti-Semitic remarks have no place in the city.
The incident has occurred amid increased scrutiny on how U.S. universities address anti-Semitism, following a Department of Education investigation revealed in March.
