An armed man, identified as Julio Cesar Jasso, opened fire on tourists at the historic Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico on April 20, 2026, killing one Canadian and injuring at least 13 others. Jasso, 27, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with authorities finding a gun, knife, and ammunition at the scene.
The shooting occurred just after 11:30 a.m. while tourists were atop the Pyramid of the Moon. Eyewitnesses described the chaos as people tried to flee and some fell from the pyramid. Many of the injured included tourists from various countries, with ages ranging from 6 to 61.
Local security at the site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and major tourist destination, had previously included scans but had been discontinued. The Mexican President and Canadian officials expressed condolences, and investigations are ongoing as the site remains closed. U.S. officials also conveyed their readiness to assist.
