Authorities in the Dominican Republic have transitioned from rescue to recovery efforts following the tragic collapse of the roof at Jetset Nightclub, which resulted in over 200 fatalities. The disaster occurred early Tuesday, prompting a national three-day mourning period. Rescue operations, which aimed to find survivors, ended as officials stated that “all reasonable possibilities” had been exhausted. Most of the recovered bodies are women, with many still needing identification.
The death toll reached 218, with 189 individuals rescued alive, while the cause of the collapse remains under investigation. Health officials reported that many victims suffered head injuries, indicating they were likely struck dead on impact. Jetset Nightclub, a popular venue in the Caribbean, could accommodate around 500 people and was known for upscale events, attracting many notable attendees. Aerial footage revealed significant destruction in the club’s structure. Dominican President Luis Abinader expressed condolences to victims’ families on-site.
