University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is set to offer free rentals of tents and camping gear for students starting this fall, a project led by rising junior Cole Becker, a health sciences major. Becker aims to merge sustainability with health initiatives to support the university’s climate action plan, including a proposed gear library by summer’s end.
Becker’s passion for sustainability began in elementary school. He recognizes its broader significance beyond recycling, emphasizing its role in community health, food security, and environmental care. The gear library, funded by the university, will include tents, sleeping bags, and other camping equipment.
As a student sustainability assistant, Becker has helped represent UMR at sustainability events and aims for the university to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2034. Plans include low-carbon commuting and enhancing energy efficiency, with goals to achieve a gold rating in sustainability.
UMR has restructured its general education requirements to emphasize sustainability, mandating related courses for students starting in 2026. Becker credits his professors for their influence and notes that UMR’s newness aids its sustainability efforts, as it can build energy-efficient structures from scratch without the impediments of retrofitting old buildings.
