A woman, Tomi Jo Major, is facing manslaughter charges after her 14-year-old son fatally struck 81-year-old Ed Ashman while performing a wheelie on an electric motorcycle in Southern California. Ashman, a former Marine and substitute teacher, succumbed to his injuries days later. Major has been charged with manslaughter, child endangerment, and additional counts related to providing false information and contributing to delinquency. Prosecutors allege she gave her son access to a dangerous vehicle despite warnings about the risks.
The motorcycle involved can reach speeds of 56 mph, exceeding legal limits for minors. Major previously complained to the sheriff’s office about someone posting a photo of her son riding it and admitted to knowing he was driving recklessly. Legal experts note that while cases of parental responsibility are gaining attention, proving negligence in e-bike cases may be challenging. The District Attorney has not disclosed whether her son will face charges, as it is a juvenile matter.
