Air New Zealand plans to introduce “Sky Nest,” bunk-style sleeping pods for economy passengers on its ultra-long-haul flights between Auckland and New York, starting in May 2026. This initiative features six full-length reclining pods in a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, allowing passengers to book a four-hour sleep session for NZ$495 (approximately $292). While travelers must purchase a seat for the 17-hour flight, they can reserve pod sessions—initially limited to two per flight—and one per person.
The sleeping pods come equipped with new bedding, privacy curtains, ambient lighting, and earplugs. Close proximity to other passengers means no sitting or eating is allowed inside the pods, and guidelines discourage strong scents.
Airline CEO Nikhil Ravishankar emphasized that enhancing travel comforts could make long flights to New Zealand more attractive. Alongside the Sky Nest, Air New Zealand already offers the Skycouch, allowing families to turn economy rows into makeshift beds.
This announcement coincides with other airlines, like United and Qantas, exploring similar benefits for economy travelers. However, external market challenges, such as rising fuel costs and geopolitical tensions, may affect air travel demand, leading to fare hikes and flight reductions.
