A fire at Congregation Beth Israel in Jackson, Mississippi, has been ruled arson, with one suspect charged. The fire, which occurred early on Saturday, caused extensive damage, particularly to the synagogue’s library, destroying many contents, including two Torah scrolls. Despite this, a Torah that survived the Holocaust was unharmed.
Zach Shemper, the congregation’s president, expressed shock at the incident but emphasized the resilience of the synagogue, which serves 150 families. The FBI and local authorities are investigating, with federal officials considering possible hate crime charges. The suspect, who reportedly sought treatment for burns at a local hospital and later confessed, remains unnamed.
The Jackson Fire Department declared that fire damage was concentrated in the library, while other parts of the building were affected by smoke and soot. Support from the local community has poured in, with nearby churches offering temporary worship space. Shemper affirmed the congregation’s commitment to rebuilding their spiritual home, emphasizing their historical presence in Jackson since 1860.
