In 2021, a segment from 60 Minutes showcased Boston Dynamics’ evolving humanoid robot, Atlas. Initially bulky and stiff, the updated Atlas now exhibits impressive agility, capable of cartwheeling, dancing, and fluid movement. Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Player emphasized their vision of creating robots that surpass human capabilities, noting Atlas’s "superhuman" range of motion.
The robot’s design has been enhanced by eliminating wires at its joints, allowing for continuous rotation and easier maintenance. With an AI powered by an Nvidia chip, Atlas can be remotely trained for tasks like stacking cups and tying knots. However, challenges remain, particularly with refining its gripping abilities.
Scott Quindersma from Boston Dynamics acknowledged the complexity of creating versatile robotic hands, which currently feature three fingers that can adapt for various tasks. Although excitement surrounding humanoid robots is high, Player cautioned that building reliable, affordable machines takes time. Analyst predictions suggest a future with many robots, but the technology is not there yet.
