In the 2023 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, co-captains Matt Allen and James Mayo achieved redemption aboard the supermaxi Master Rock Comanche, winning line honors and the John H. Illingworth Trophy after last year’s early withdrawal due to a mainsail failure. This victory marks the boat’s fifth win in the iconic race, adding to Allen’s three previous victories.
Mayo emphasized their partnership, developed through shared experiences, stating the disappointment from last year motivated their return. The race was filled with drama as Master Rock Comanche initially lost a significant lead but ultimately regained it, finishing at 6:03:36 PM AEDT, with an official time of 2 days, 5 hours, 3 minutes, and 36 seconds.
Allen expressed excitement and a desire to celebrate, hinting at the uncertain future of their participation next year. Second place went to RoConnect, followed by HSK Screwwag, while Lucky secured fourth. The winner of the prestigious Tattersall Cup for overall victory in corrected time remains to be announced as other teams arrive in Hobart.
