Ashley Buzzard, a 40-year-old California mother, pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of first-degree murder and related firearm offenses in the death of her 9-year-old daughter, Melody Buzzard. During an emotional arraignment in Santa Barbara County Superior Court, court attendees reacted strongly as she entered her plea. Buzzard is being held without bail, with a preliminary hearing set for January 7.
The alleged murder took place during an October road trip, after which Buzzard returned to Santa Barbara County alone. Melody was reported missing after failing to return home from the trip, prompting an investigation that revealed careful evasion tactics by Buzzard, including disguises and changing license plates.
On December 6, Melody’s remains were discovered in Utah, and authorities believe she was killed on or around October 9. Investigators noted a high level of premeditation in Buzzard’s actions, with evidence indicating the murder was brutal and calculated. Ballistics evidence linked shell casings found near the crime scene to those at Buzzard’s home. Buzzard was arrested on December 23 after authorities gathered various forms of evidence.
Buzzard’s financial struggles, including bankruptcy filings, are also highlighted, but a motive for the crime remains undetermined. The case is being tried in California despite the crime occurring in Utah, and Buzzard’s next court date will determine if the evidence is sufficient to proceed to trial.
