An Arctic air mass is affecting the Carolinas, specifically the Triad region, leading to exceptionally low temperatures expected on Sunday and Monday. The average high for this time of December is usually in the low 50s, with lows around the low 30s, but current forecasts predict temperatures could drop to 12 degrees, which would be the coldest since late January.

The last time temperatures felt this low was in late February 2025. Although the predicted temperatures are not record-breaking, the wind chill factors could make conditions feel dangerous, particularly in the mountainous areas. The coldest recorded temperatures in the Triad date back to January 1985, when readings dropped to -8°F in Greensboro.

Residents are advised to take cold weather safety seriously, as wind chills are expected to fall into the single digits. For more detailed weather updates and safety information, locals are encouraged to refer to resources provided by the WXII 12 First Alert Weather Team.
