On December 5, 2025, the U.S. Army held a significant transition ceremony at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, activating the U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command (USAWHC). This new command combines elements of U.S. Army Forces Command, Northern Command, and Southern Command into a unified four-star operational command. General Joseph A. Ryan assumed command, succeeding General Andrew Poppas, who is retiring after 37 years of service.
The USAWHC’s missions include homeland defense, crisis response, regional security cooperation, and assisting civilian authorities. It aims to improve operational agility and streamline processes, enabling faster military responses while reinforcing alliances in the Western Hemisphere. The command is expected to achieve initial operational capability by February 2026 and full capability by summer 2026.
The ceremonial events underscored the Army’s ongoing transformation, uniting three powerful commands to address national strategic priorities more effectively. The newly designed emblem, featuring an eagle and a globe, symbolizes strategic readiness and modernization efforts.
