The developer behind the indie game Megabonk has decided to withdraw from The Game Awards after being nominated for Best Debut Indie Game. He clarified that Megabonk is not his first game, as he has previously released titles under a different studio name. In a social media announcement, he expressed gratitude for the nomination but felt it was inappropriate for the category.
Geoff Keighley, the founder of The Game Awards, confirmed the nomination would be removed, praising the developer’s honesty. Other games nominated for the same category include Blue Prince, Claire Obscur: Expedition 33, Despelote, and Dispatch. While some debate the eligibility of nominations due to prior industry experience, Expedition 33 has set a record with 12 nominations this year, including for Game of the Year.
