David Alfonso Barrera Nunez is facing federal charges after a boat carrying migrants from Mexico capsized near San Diego, resulting in the deaths of four passengers. Arrested on Saturday, he is charged with unlawful entry for financial gain and causing death, with potential sentences including life in prison or the death penalty. Barrera-Nunez is slated for a detention hearing later this week.
On Friday night, U.S. Border Patrol reported the vessel crossing the border. It capsized in six-foot waves off Imperial Beach shortly thereafter. While four died, five others were rescued. Survivors indicated that engine issues and an argument with Barrera-Nunez led to the incident, which trapped several individuals below deck.
Authorities highlighted the dangers of using unstable migrant vessels, citing this event and past occurrences. Another individual, Luis Enrique Barreto Goitia, faces charges for illegally entering the U.S. after prior deportation.
