In LaPorte County, Indiana, police have identified Sergeant Justin Heflin as the officer fatally shot during a pursuit that began in Berrien County. Heflin, a 12-year veteran of the Indiana State Police and a former U.S. Marine, is currently in stable condition after undergoing successful surgery at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
The suspect, Kevin Myers, 54, from La Porte, was found dead later, with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Myers had an extensive criminal history and had been involved in a previous officer-involved shooting in 2019. The shooting incident took place around 7 a.m. on Friday at a Speedway gas station, following a chase initiated by deputies trying to stop a suspected stolen vehicle.
A massive police response involving over 100 officers was deployed, utilizing armored vehicles, drones, and K9 units. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.
