On Earth Day, Lincoln’s Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announced that the city has made progress on 76% of its climate action plan, a priority since she took office in May 2019. This plan, part of the Resilient Lincoln initiative launched in 2021, aims for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Gaylor Baird highlighted achievements in cleaner air, improved transportation, and strengthened local food systems due to community collaboration.
However, federal green energy policies have posed challenges, such as grant application rejections for electric vehicle (EV) chargers. In response, the city is pivoting to collaborate with Lincoln Public Schools on EV charger installations and seeking alternative grants. Since 2011, greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 30%, aided by transitioning city vehicles to electric and hybrid models.
Despite these successes, Gaylor Baird expressed concerns over the federal rollback of EPA regulations, which could hinder future efforts. Key initiatives moving forward include enhancing energy efficiency, transitioning the vehicle fleet by 2040, securing additional water sources, and improving floodplain resilience.
An Earth Day celebration is scheduled at the University of Nebraska Innovation Campus. Further details are available on the city’s Earth Day website.
