Recent studies highlight a growing trend among teens and adults using AI chatbots for emotional support and peer interaction, prompting a call to mental health providers to explore how their patients engage with these technologies. Shadi Saba, a social work professor at NYU, emphasizes that understanding the motivations behind this reliance can offer valuable insights into individuals’ mental health.
The American Psychological Association supports Saba’s recommendation of discussing chatbot use with patients to better comprehend their emotional needs and coping mechanisms. Chatbots are often used to seek advice on managing stress, anxiety, and relationship issues, which therapists can leverage to enhance their support.
Dr. Tom Insel, a psychiatrist, notes that chatbots provide a safe space to discuss sensitive topics that clients might shy away from in traditional therapy settings. However, Saba cautions that therapists should approach this topic with curiosity, avoiding judgment.
Therapists are encouraged to ask about the usefulness of chatbot interactions while also recognizing the limitations of AI in therapy. The discussion can reveal areas where chatbots might aid therapy or highlight potential risks, such as privacy concerns.
Psychologist Cami Winkelspecht underscores the importance of familiarizing oneself with AI technologies as they play an increasingly significant role in young people’s lives, advocating for open discussions about their use.
