On July 31st, the Delta Park BottleDrop in North Portland will close, as announced by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative (OBRC). This decision ends a long-standing debate about the facility, located at 1176 N. Hayden Meadows Drive. BottleDrop is expanding its green and blue bag drop sites in the area through partnerships with local retailers.

For many, the BottleDrop provided a source of extra income, with frequent visitors like Jesse Brown expressing disappointment over the closure. However, some local business owners, such as John Dhu from ZC Cabinet and Countertop, believe the change will improve the neighborhood. Winnie Nguyen, a manager at Premier Beauty Supply, feels that the BottleDrop has contributed to local crime issues, citing her store’s experience with repeated burglaries and other incidents.

While some patrons, like Tracy Freeman, argue that the area is safe, others associate the BottleDrop facility with adverse conditions. OBRC plans to work with nearby retailers to accept bottles through their Green and Blue Bag programs, although specific locations have yet to be announced.

The Portland Police Bureau noted the complexity of linking crime directly to the BottleDrop, highlighting that criminal activity can occur in proximity without direct causation. OBRC emphasized the environmental benefits of Oregon’s Bottle Bill, aiming to expand recycling access while bolstering community initiatives.
