Starting Wednesday, New Yorkers will experience a new audio artwork titled “Listen to Something, Free” by conceptual artist Chloe Bass, which will take over the public address systems of 14 metro stations, including Grand Central and Union Square. This initiative marks the first collaboration between the MTA and Creative Time, allowing artists to use its announcement infrastructure.

The piece features 24 poetic presentations in six languages, designed to gently disrupt the everyday commute by encouraging riders to reflect on their surroundings and emotional states. Most announcements last about 30 seconds and include voices from professional actors and everyday New Yorkers.

Bass, who has deep family roots in the city, emphasized that the project aims to bring a bit of interior life back to public spaces. Stations were chosen for their sound systems and layouts that allow for contemplation, and the initiative runs until October 5th, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design.

After years of negotiation, Bass worked closely with the MTA to ensure the project’s success, even testing announcements in their Audio System Control Room. To promote the launch, she held live performances at the Fulton Center, offering the complete sequence of presentations for a limited time, creating a unique experience for those who catch it.
