Tensions escalated during a protest outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, which houses asylum seekers. Over 1,000 demonstrators gathered, leading to six arrests after violence broke out, including bottles and smoke flares thrown at police. The protests followed the arrest of asylum seekers on suspicion of sexual assault.
Arrests included a 16-year-old from South London and a 36-year-old Epping resident, with charges related to violent disorder and criminal damage. Police implemented a Section 35 order to prevent further disturbances and restricted facial coverings under Section 60AA during the protests.
Ch Supt Simon Anslow expressed concern over the protests turning into unlawful behavior and stressed the need for public order. Despite the legal right to protest, he emphasized the importance of respect and safety. Police maintained a strong presence while responding to the situation.
