The European Union has imposed sanctions on over 80 individuals and entities in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, targeting prominent figures including Metropolitan Tikhon, an Orthodox priest linked to President Vladimir Putin. The EU accuses him of spreading propaganda to justify the invasion. The sanctions, according to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Karas, aim to pressure Russia to end the war and disrupt its military-industrial complex, having already cost Russia over $1 trillion.
The new sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans while targeting individuals involved in military supply chains and propagandists, such as social media influencers. This announcement coincided with a Russian missile strike on Ukrainian cities, prompting Ukrainian President Zelensky to urge further international action against Russia. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant civilian and military casualties, marking one of Europe’s most severe crises since World War II.
