Haiti is observing three days of national mourning following a deadly clash at Fort Laferrière, which resulted in at least 25 deaths. The incident, which took place during a local DJ’s event at the historical Citadel, led to a stampede exacerbated by heavy rain. In response, the Ministry of Culture and Communication has dismissed two officials for negligence, with the government admitting responsibility for the tragedy.
Nine individuals, including five police officers and two officials from the National Heritage Conservation Institute, have been arrested. The incident highlights ongoing crises in Haiti, including gang violence, particularly following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 that created a power vacuum exploited by criminal networks. Recent months have seen significant gang-related violence and fatalities, prompting calls for increased government intervention.
