A 20-year-old named Daniel Morenogama has been arrested for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, intending to kill him. This act occurred early on a Friday morning, with Morenogama reportedly traveling from Texas to San Francisco and expressing his opposition to artificial intelligence (AI) in writings that warned of its dangers to humanity.
Authorities say Morenogama set part of Altman’s property ablaze before attempting to threaten OpenAI’s headquarters shortly after. He has been charged with state attempts of murder and arson, alongside federal charges for possessing an unregistered firearm and using an explosive device, with potential penalties ranging from 19 years to life in prison.
FBI agent Matt Cobo labeled the incident as a planned act of domestic terrorism. Surveillance footage captures Morenogama throwing the incendiary device and attempting to break into OpenAI’s office while threatening to burn it down.
Despite his actions, advocacy groups have condemned the violence, urging for constructive dialogue about AI’s future. Altman commented on the threats, highlighting the need to reduce aggressive rhetoric surrounding AI discussions. The incident raises heightened concerns about the societal implications of AI technology, especially as discussions around its impact grow more prevalent.
