Pope Leo XIV sent a message to Sarah Mulally as she was installed as Archbishop of Canterbury on March 25, emphasizing her responsibilities within the Diocese of Canterbury, the Church of England, and the wider Anglican Communion. The ceremony, attended by around 2,000 guests including the Prince and Princess of Wales, marked the official start of her duties.
The Pope referenced the historic 1966 meeting between Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Michael Ramsey, which fostered a fraternal relationship between Catholics and Anglicans, and noted the achievements of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) in promoting mutual understanding over the past 60 years. Despite challenges and new disagreements, he asserted the importance of recognizing one another as brothers and sisters in Christ and encouraged continued dialogue in truth and love.
Pope Leo also highlighted the potential hindrance divisions pose to the common Christian mission, stressing that a united Christian community enhances the clarity of the Gospel’s proclamation. His message was shared at Canterbury Cathedral during a liturgy commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 1966 meeting, attended by various church leaders.
