A Tejas fighter jet crashed during a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show, resulting in the death of IAF pilot Flight Lieutenant Colonel Namanshu Shall. The aircraft faltered during a low-altitude aerobatic maneuver, failing to recover from a “negative G-turn” before plunging to the ground in a fireball at Al Maktoum International Airport. This incident marks the second crash of the Tejas since its induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF) a decade ago; the first occurred in March 2022, with the pilot managing to eject safely.
The IAF ordered a Court of Inquiry to investigate the crash, with speculation pointing to possible power loss or control failure. Despite the tragedy, the Tejas has had a good safety record overall since its establishment, although development has been fraught with delays. India has been actively showcasing the Tejas Mark-1 jets at international air shows to promote their export potential, recently securing contracts for upgraded models.
Minister Rajnath Singh expressed condolences for the loss of the pilot, highlighting the inherent risks of military aviation. The IAF currently has 38 Tejas Mark-1 jets out of a total order of 40, and is also awaiting the delivery of 180 upgraded Tejas Mark-1A jets, which are delayed due to engine supply issues and pending weapon trials.
