Demand for flights from California to Japan has surged, prompting airlines to offer daily nonstop flights starting this summer. San Diego International Airport announced that Japan Airlines (JAL) will increase its flights from San Diego to Tokyo’s Narita Airport from four to seven weekly flights, effective August 1.
Officials noted a 42% increase in passenger travel between San Diego and Asia from 2023 to 2025, driven by tourism, business, and family visits. JAL has been operating this route since 2012, and the increased flights are expected to bolster economic and defense ties between the regions, with over 30 Japanese companies investing around $8.7 billion in San Diego County.
Passengers will also have access to various connections across Asia from Tokyo. In a related move, San Francisco International Airport plans to offer nonstop flights to Sapporo, Japan, starting in December 2026, marking a first for direct flights from the mainland U.S. to that city. United Airlines will operate these flights three times a week during the winter for skiing enthusiasts.
Ticket prices for these flights are set at $1,500 in December, increasing to $1,700 in March.
