Utah has declared a state of emergency and restricted fireworks as wildfires rage across the state, notably the Cottonwood Fire, which has grown to over 112 square miles and is 0% contained. With extreme weather conditions exacerbating the situation, including strong winds and drought, around 10 wildfires are currently burning across Utah, affecting over 144,700 acres. Authorities have warned residents in certain areas to prepare for potential evacuations.
The National Weather Service issued rare warnings for “particularly dangerous conditions,” indicating a heightened risk for rapid fire spread. Firefighters are battling multiple blazes, and many communities are on alert due to the escalating fire danger. Governor Spencer Cox emphasized the unique severity of the current fire season, enabling state-level restrictions on fireworks until July 5.
As conditions worsen, Rocky Mountain Power has also issued warnings for potential power outages in several areas. On a broader scale, nearly 3 million acres have burned across the U.S. this year, surpassing the 10-year average. Firefighting efforts span nationwide from Alaska to Florida, as officials continue to address the surge in wildfires.
