Sound Transit’s board has approved a long-range plan detailing transportation projects set to move forward over the next 25 years, amid a significant $34.5 billion funding gap. The plan, approved by a 16-2 vote, comes after a year-long initiative prompted by rising costs, labor shortages, and inflation affecting the ST3 expansion package voted on in 2016.
Key projects slated for full funding include:
– Tacoma Dome Access Improvements
– West Seattle Link Extension (excluding Avalon Station)
– Renton Transit Center Parking
– Various phases of the Everett Link Extension
– Initial Ballard Link Extension segment to Seattle Center
Several projects, including the Ballard Link Extension and additional Sounder expansions, will require more funding before construction can proceed. Meanwhile, projects like the Tacoma Dome Link Extension Parking and various Stride Bus Rapid Transit improvements will be delayed until further funding is secured.
The revised system plan introduces cost-saving measures and new revenue sources, with priorities set on projects already under construction or nearing construction. Sound Transit aims to seek additional funding through federal, state, and local channels while emphasizing the ongoing commitment to the ST3 plan.
Board Chairman Dave Summers noted that this approach balances fiscal realities with long-term goals, while Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson expressed frustration over delays but highlighted progress on several Seattle-area projects.
The vote reflects a response to community demands for accessible transportation, as Sound Transit continues to face significant financial challenges while striving to fulfill its ambitious expansion goals for regional transit.
