The New York Rangers have traded star winger Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick and prospect Liam Greentree. After the trade, Panarin will sign a two-year contract extension valued at $11 million per year. This move follows Rangers general manager Chris Drury’s announcement to fans about a team “realignment” and his decision not to offer Panarin a contract extension.
Greentree, 20, was the 26th pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and has excelled with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires. The third-round pick from the Kings could elevate to a second-round pick if they win a playoff round, with additional conditions if they progress further.
Panarin, who previously signed a seven-year contract with the Rangers, has had a notable career in New York, ranking ninth in franchise history with 607 points. He has also had a controversial tenure, including off-ice incidents that drew media attention.
The Kings hope Panarin will bolster their offensive capabilities as they aim for playoff success. Although their offense has struggled, Panarin’s 57 points this season would make him the team’s leading scorer. As the Kings deal with the potential retirement of captain Anze Kopitar, this trade reflects a strategic push for the playoffs.
