More than 600 cultural artefacts were stolen from Bristol Museum’s archives during a raid on September 25. The items included military memorabilia, jewelry, and sculptures made from ivory, bronze, and silver. Key pieces were taken from the museum’s British Empire and Commonwealth collection.
Police have released images of four men captured on CCTV and are seeking public assistance in identifying them. Detective Con Dan Bergan noted that the theft is a significant loss to the city, as many items are historical donations reflecting Britain’s past with countries of the British Empire.
Philip Walker, from Bristol City Council, expressed deep sadness over the incident, highlighting the cultural importance of the stolen items to communities connected to that history. Police investigations are underway, including forensic analysis, while staff are auditing the archives to determine the full extent of the loss.
