Google is launching a new “AI Mode” in its search engine to enhance user interactions with expert-like chatbot capabilities, aiming to maintain its competitive edge against services like ChatGPT. This feature will be available in the U.S. starting Tuesday and is part of Google’s strategy to integrate its Gemini chatbot into search functionalities, signifying a “new phase of AI platform shift,” according to CEO Sundar Pichai.
Additionally, Google plans to introduce augmented reality glasses developed in collaboration with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These glasses will include cameras, microphones, and speakers, aiming to rival Meta’s AI-powered glasses.
Experts like Leo Gebbie suggest that this AI integration may reduce the need for users to browse multiple web pages, streamlining their experience. However, this shift could significantly impact Google’s revenue from search, especially as the company faces legal scrutiny regarding its market dominance.
Despite past challenges with AI features, Google reports that its AI Summary tool, launched last year, has seen substantial engagement, achieving 1.5 billion monthly uses globally. Pichai emphasized its success and potential for future growth.
